Painted in 1998, First Knock is a small painting on birch plywood panel, about 12” x 7”, The theme for this dates to 1981 and there are several related works preceding this. The fluorescent trousers were for real, and tricky to mimic in paint. Winsor and Newton’s Permanent Rose seems the nearest equivalent hue. The subject, a neighbor, was shyly hiding behind the column after knocking at the door; hence the title.
